UBL 100W siren speakers

Back of a UBL 100W siren speaker with its mounting bolt in a raised boss at the center.

Two UBL 100W speakers bolted straight to the grille guard punch plate on their own center bolts, wired in parallel for a 5.5 Ω load on the CanTrol siren amp.

Legal notice

Emergency lighting and siren use is regulated by state law and permits. This page documents a personal build and is not legal guidance.

Two siren speakers on the front of the truck, driven by the Whelen CanTrol WC’s built-in siren amplifier, mounted without drilling and aimed straight ahead. Done means both are bolted to the punch plate, wired in parallel with matched polarity, every tone is tested at low volume, and the impedance is read off the labels.

  • Load: the CanTrol accepts one or two 100W speakers with a 5.5 Ω minimum total load (guide 14580G). Two 11 Ω speakers in parallel make exactly 5.5 Ω, so the label impedance must be confirmed before wiring. An 8 Ω rating would put two speakers below Whelen’s minimum.
  • Mount: no drilling on the guard. Each speaker uses its own center bolt through an existing punch plate hole.
  • Speakers only connect to an amplifier’s speaker output. Never to 12V.
  • Certification: Whelen certifies SAE, California Title 13 and NFPA compliance with Whelen speakers. Third-party speakers work but may not carry that certification.

Unverified

The 11 Ω and dB figures come from the listing, not a UBL document I could open. The impedance gets read off each speaker’s label before wiring. A meter reads DC resistance, so 7 to 9 Ω on an 11 Ω speaker is normal (general knowledge).

No L-bracket. With its flange bolted flat to the plate, the speaker would aim up or down. Instead, the speaker’s own center bolt goes straight through the punch plate.

(existing hole, no drilling) at least 2 threads past the nut
  1. Spin a 1/4”-28 nut onto one speaker bolt at the store before buying the set. The heads are stamped 8.8, a metric-style marking, so the thread needs checking even though UBL says 1/4”-28.
  2. Offer the speaker to its bay, above the lower horizontal tube against the outside of each center vertical tube, and confirm it fits.
  3. Stack in front of the plate: rubber washer against the speaker, then the flat washer.
  4. Behind the plate: fender washer, then the nyloc with blue thread locker. At least two threads must show past the nut; if not, use a longer 1/4”-28 bolt.
  5. Re-check after the first drives. One center bolt can let a speaker twist on a vibrating guard. If it turns, add a second fastener or a tab that bears on a mesh hole (suggestion, not yet tried).

The CanTrol’s siren amp has two speaker leads: orange (high) and brown (low). Both speakers are wired in parallel with matched polarity.

The 16 AWG runs go through the grille in split loom, through a firewall grommet, and back to the module under the driver-side rear seat. Extend the module’s own orange and brown leads with 16 AWG only if they’re short.

Never on 12V

Never connect a siren speaker straight to 12V, and never run a siren tone with no speaker connected. Speakers connect only to an amplifier’s speaker output.

Each speaker has a round label at the center of its face. A custom printed 2.5 in round sticker goes over it (10-pack, Amazon B07WSKX5CR, $13.95). I made 13 design options, cropped to 2.5 in circles, with a two-page print sheet. One will be picked:

  1. Thin blue line
  2. Thin orange line
  3. Subdued
  4. Bobcat
  5. Panther
  6. C.A.T. Unit panther
  7. C.A.T. Unit bobcat
  8. C.A.T. Unit tribal cat
  9. C.A.T. Unit geometric cat
  10. Emergency Management Radio Communications seal
  11. Emergency Management Radio Communications seal with C.A.T. Unit
  12. Communications Unit coin
  13. Communications Unit coin with C.A.T. Unit

The design images aren’t published here because several include official seals and emblems.
