SpeedTech Raptor visor light bar

Amber/amber split visor bar installed 18 Oct on SpeedTech's F-150 brackets. Runs today from a 12V plug; on wiring day it moves to J1-2 through its Grand Control Box.

Legal notice

Emergency lighting and siren use is regulated by state law and permits. This page documents a personal build and is not legal guidance.

A forward-facing amber warning bar inside the windshield that comes on in every slide position, with no roof mount (the truck has a panoramic roof). Done means the bar is hardwired to J1-2 through the Grand Control Box, its patterns work from the control head, and the cable is hidden along the headliner and A-pillar.

  • No roof mounts. The bar sits inside the windshield on SpeedTech’s vehicle-specific visor brackets.
  • Patterns need the Grand Control Box. SpeedTech’s manual says patterns are “only functional when using in conjunction with STL Grand Control Box.”
  • Fuse: keep SpeedTech’s own fuse, no larger.
  • Airbags: the cable runs along the headliner and A-pillar. Keep it behind the curtain airbag, never across its deployment path, and refit the pillar trim clips the way Ford designed them.
  • Steady burn: SpeedTech says not to run steady burn more than an hour.

Today those wires all go into the Grand Control Box, and the box’s own buttons pick the function.

Installed 18 October 2026, with the cable along the headliner and A-pillar. For now it runs from a 12V socket plug with a built-in fuse.

Hardwire steps for wiring day: cut off the 12V socket plug, read the fuse rating that was in it, put a Nilight in-line fuse holder with that same rating on the red wire, join red to the J1-2 wire (V1) and black to ground (V2).

No-cut alternative: wire a 12V female socket (about $8, not on the shopping list) to J1-2 and plug the bar’s existing plug into it.

The proposed all-lights five modes plan has an open choice (decision B) for this bar:

  • Direct from the CanTrol: the Grand Control Box comes out and the CanTrol drives white, brown, green, yellow/black, blue and yellow on LED Outputs 18 to 23, with J1-2 still the +12V. All five modes work with one press. This only happens if a bench test shows the bar runs useful patterns without the box.
  • Keep the Grand Control Box: simpler. The visor stays on the box’s own buttons, outside the one-press modes.

Through the Grand Control Box: dim, steady, pattern (bench test plan, setup for the visor). For the five-modes option: red and white only, then add the rest, and test whether yellow steps patterns with no box.

Symptom Likely cause and fix
Flashes but patterns won’t change The Grand Control Box is not in the chain
Dead after hardwiring Fuse in the new holder, J1-2 not programmed for that slide position, or a poor ground
  • Read the fuse rating inside the 12V plug before cutting it off.
  • Decide five-modes option B: direct from the CanTrol, or keep the Grand Control Box.
